Sample prep
2 minute cell lysis undertaken using a low cost, off-the-shelf cell phone motor modified with a blade to break open the cells and release the DNA.

DNA extraction
3 minute DNA purification using a novel filter to capture contaminant cellular components such as carbohydrates and proteins, leaving the DNA in solution.

This technology is also being developed into next generation spin columns, DNA-XT™, to simplify DNA purification workflows in clinical and research laboratories.

DNA amplification
7 minute continuous flow PCR using static heat blocks at three distinct temperatures. Macrofluidics cycle the sample over these heat blocks, for rapid ramping.

Sensitive in-line optics observe the generation of fluorescence as the target region is amplified providing a qPCR read-out, for sample to qPCR result in just over 10 minutes.

DNA detection
5 minute microarray detection is also conducted to interrogate the target region at multiple sites for drug sensitivity testing. A microwire array is spotted with DNA probes complementary to the target DNA marker.

The sample is flowed over the array; if the target DNA is present in the sample, hybridisation occurs and fluorescence is detected.
