The Problem

The discovery of antibiotics has been crucial to our survival, yet the rise of antimicrobial resistance is threatening to make them ineffective in the future.

Since the discovery of penicillin our misuse of antibiotics, including in animal husbandry, has caused bacteria to evolve resistance, leading to the emergence of untreatable superbugs.

The number of patients with multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) or resistance to rifampicin, the most common frontline drug, detected worldwide increased between 2012 and 2013 by 20%

Our Solution

Q-POC will identify the presence and strain of infection, ensuring the right drug is prescribed first time. Facilitating a more intelligent use of antibiotics producing more effective prevention and targeted treatments in the future.

“At the moment it is very difficult for doctors to tell which antibiotics are needed to treat an infection. If anyone can develop an easy and quick way to tell what infection a patient has...this would lead to much more targeted use of antibiotics, and a much reduced threat from resistant strains.”
Geoff Mulgan

“ Point-of-care test kits will allow more targeted use of antibiotics, and an overall reduction in misdiagnosis and prescription. Effective and accurate point of care tests will form a vital part of the toolkit for stewardship of antibiotics in the future.”
